What Is High Voltage Cable in the UK?
Voltage bands are named differently depending on who is asking. Cable manufacturers and IEC standards class cable from 1kV up to 35kV as medium voltage, and anything above that as high voltage. UK distribution network operators (DNOs) use their own terms: LV runs up to 1kV, HV usually means the 6.6kV, 11kV and 20kV networks, and EHV covers 33kV, 66kV and 132kV. An “11kV HV cable” on a DNO drawing is the same product a manufacturer lists as medium voltage.
As high voltage cable stockists we cover both: 11kV and 33kV distribution cable from our medium voltage cable range, and project-specific cable above 35kV sourced to your specification.
BS7870 High Voltage Cable
BS 7870 is the British Standard for polymeric insulated cables used by distribution and generation utilities, covering fixed installations up to 19/33kV. It is the standard most UK DNOs call up, alongside their own engineering specifications.
- BS 7870-4.10 covers XLPE insulated, copper wire screened cables for 11kV and 33kV networks, supplied as single core or triplex (three single cores twisted together) with copper or aluminium conductors.
- BS 7870-3 covers the low voltage side of the same networks, including Waveform, CNE and concentric service cables.
- Typical construction: compacted stranded conductor, semi-conducting conductor screen, XLPE insulation, semi-conducting insulation screen, copper wire screen and a tough polymeric oversheath.
BS7870 cable price and datasheets: prices depend on conductor material and size, core configuration, drum length and metal markets, so we quote each enquiry individually. Ask for the manufacturer datasheet with your quote. It lists conductor resistance, current ratings in air and in ground, minimum bending radius and standard drum lengths.
BS6622 and BS7835 Armoured HV Cable
Industrial sites, solar farms, data centres and private networks usually specify armoured cable instead. BS 6622 (PVC oversheath) and BS 7835 (low smoke zero halogen oversheath) cover XLPE or EPR insulated cables from 3.8/6.6kV up to 19/33kV, with steel wire armour on three core cables and aluminium wire armour on single cores. Check conductor sizes and ratings on our MV cable size chart.
High Voltage Cable Accessories
Every high voltage cable run needs matched accessories from the same voltage class. We supply:
- MV and HV cable joints: heat shrink, cold shrink and silicone filled joints, including transition joints for paper to polymeric cable
- MV and HV terminations for indoor and outdoor use up to 36kV
- MV compression lugs and connectors
- Cable cleats for single core cables laid in trefoil (see our trefoil cleat size chart)
High Voltage Cable FAQs
Is 11kV cable high voltage?
On UK distribution networks, yes: DNOs call 11kV “HV”. In manufacturer catalogues and IEC standards the same cable is classed as medium voltage, because that band runs from 1kV to 35kV.
What is the difference between BS7870 and BS6622 cable?
BS 7870 cables are utility distribution cables, normally unarmoured with a copper wire screen, laid in DNO networks. BS 6622 cables are armoured and are built for industrial and commercial installations where mechanical protection is needed.
Can you supply high voltage cable cut to length?
Yes. Tell us the length, size and standard and we will confirm stock, drum sizes and lead times. See buying cable by the metre for how our cut-to-length service works.
