Gary Barnett – Technical and Training Manager, tells us about his role at the group and how he and the team at Cable Services can support customers through training and internal knowledge to meet their project requirements
➡️ Dedicated Training Facilities in both Wrexham and East Kilbride 🏢
➡️ Training in an environment which isn’t disturbed by production and outside influences. 🫡
➡️ Training based on manufacturers installation instructions 📰
➡️ Courses follow the requirement of the individual DNO’s 📖

Purpose-built training facilities
Training at Cable Services doesn’t happen in a corner of a warehouse. Our custom-built facility at the Wrexham head office gives delegates 3,000 square feet dedicated entirely to training, with a classroom equipped with full audiovisual kit, a two-level workshop space, product display and demonstration areas, break-out spaces and on-site parking. Because the facility is separate from the day-to-day running of the branch, courses run in a calm environment that isn’t disturbed by production or outside influences – delegates can concentrate on the products in front of them. A second training facility at our Smith Electrical branch in Glasgow extends the same support to customers in Scotland and the north.
What the courses cover
Courses span the full voltage range we supply. At low voltage, that includes Safetrack pin brazing and FurseWELD exothermic welding. At medium voltage, delegates can complete Lovink and Pfisterer cable jointing courses covering the 12kV to 36kV range. At high voltage, training covers TE three-piece joints, composite terminations and 132kV dry plug-in terminations. Every course is product familiarisation in the truest sense: training is based on the manufacturers’ own installation instructions, so what delegates learn in the workshop is exactly what they will be expected to do in the field.
Why manufacturer-backed training matters
A cable joint or termination is only as good as the person who installs it, and the consequences of getting it wrong on a live network are serious – failed joints mean outages, rework and cost. That is why we put so much weight on training delivered against the manufacturers’ own installation instructions rather than a generic approximation. It protects the installer, it protects the network, and it protects the warranty on the products themselves. For contractors, having operatives certified on the specific systems a project calls for is increasingly a condition of getting on site at all, which makes accessible, well-run product training a commercial issue as much as a technical one.
Built around DNO requirements
Anyone working on distribution networks knows that each DNO has its own requirements, and our courses are structured to follow them. Sessions are supported and delivered by authorised trainers from the group’s key supply partners, and delegates leave with the relevant certification for the products they have trained on – the paperwork that lets them get straight onto site.
Problem solvers by habit
As Gary says, the team’s philosophy is a simple one: if we can’t solve the problem, we know people who can. That extends to how the courses themselves are arranged – where a project deadline demands it, the team will do everything possible to accommodate training at short notice so that installers can be certified and back on the job without costly delays.
