A Guide to 6242Y Twin and Earth Cable

6242Y twin and earth cable is the standard PVC insulated, PVC sheathed flat cable used for fixed wiring in UK domestic and light commercial installations. The cable contains two insulated current-carrying conductors (brown live, blue neutral) and a bare copper circuit protective conductor (CPC), all sheathed within a flat grey PVC outer jacket. It is manufactured to BS6004 and rated 300/500V. Twin and earth is the cable specified for lighting circuits, socket ring final circuits, cooker circuits and shower circuits in the vast majority of UK homes built or rewired since the 1960s.

The "6242Y" designation is a British Standard cable code rather than a manufacturer brand. The "6242" identifies the construction - two insulated cores plus one bare CPC - and the "Y" identifies PVC as both the insulation and the sheath material. Every BS6004-compliant flat twin and earth cable from any UK manufacturer carries the same 6242Y code. Selecting the right size for the circuit, installing it correctly under BS7671, and using the right accessories at the terminations is what distinguishes a compliant installation from a hazard.

What Is 6242Y Twin and Earth Cable?

6242Y is the British Standard cable code for the standard flat twin and earth cable used across UK fixed wiring installations. The cable is governed by BS6004 and is the dominant choice for domestic and light commercial circuits.

How Is The Cable Constructed?

6242Y Construction Explained

6242Y contains two PVC insulated conductors and a bare circuit protective conductor (CPC), all enclosed in a flat grey PVC outer sheath. It is rated 300/500V and built to BS6004.

Conductor Identification:
  • Brown: Live conductor (line)
  • Blue: Neutral conductor
  • Bare copper: Circuit Protective Conductor (earth) - sleeved with green and yellow sleeving at terminations

The flat profile is what distinguishes twin and earth from round multi-core cables. It lets the cable sit neatly under floorboards, in stud walls and in plaster channels without bulking out the wall finish.

Where Is Twin and Earth Cable Used?

Standard UK Domestic and Light Commercial Applications

Twin and earth cable is the standard fixed wiring cable for UK domestic and light commercial installations. Typical applications include:

  • Lighting circuits - usually 1mm² or 1.5mm²
  • Socket ring final circuits - 2.5mm² protected by a 32A MCB
  • Radial socket circuits - 2.5mm² or 4mm² depending on length and load
  • Cooker and shower circuits - 6mm² or 10mm² depending on rating
  • Submain runs to outbuildings, garages, annexes - 6mm² to 16mm²

Twin and earth cable must be installed in accordance with BS7671. It is suitable for clipping direct, installing under floorboards, in conduit, or in trunking.

Where Twin and Earth Should NOT Be Used

Twin and earth cable is not a universal fixed wiring cable. It is not suitable for:

  • Direct burial in ground - use SWA armoured cable instead
  • External use without mechanical protection - PVC sheathed twin and earth is not UV resistant
  • Continuously hot locations above 70°C - PVC insulation thermal rating limit
  • Industrial control wiring - use SY/CY/YY control cable instead
  • Public buildings where smoke and toxic fumes are a safety concern - use 6491B LSZH equivalent

Critical Risk: Using twin and earth in unsuitable environments can lead to insulation breakdown, fire risk, or non-compliance with BS7671.

Which Size Twin and Earth Cable Do You Need?

Twin and Earth Sizing Guide

Cable size depends on the design current of the circuit, the protective device, the installation method and the length of the run. As a general UK guide:

Cable Size Typical Application Typical Protective Device
1.0mm²Lighting circuits6A MCB
1.5mm²Lighting circuits, longer runs10A MCB
2.5mm²Ring final socket circuits, short radial sockets32A MCB (ring), 20A MCB (radial)
4.0mm²Long radial sockets, immersion heaters32A MCB
6.0mm²Cooker circuits, shower circuits40A or 45A MCB
10.0mm²Large shower circuits, sub-mains50A MCB
16.0mm²Heavy sub-mains, larger appliances63A MCB or higher

Voltage Drop Note: Current ratings reduce significantly on long runs or when cables are grouped together. Always confirm with the BS7671 tables or our cable calculator.

Use our cable calculator to verify the correct size for any specific installation - it applies BS7671 voltage drop and current rating tables automatically.

Twin and Earth or Single Core 6491X?

Twin and earth (6242Y) bundles two cores and an earth into one flat sheathed cable. Single core 6491X bundles one core only, with no sheath.

  • Use 6242Y twin and earth for clipping direct, burying in plaster, running under floorboards, and any installation where two cores plus earth need to run together without additional containment.
  • Use 6491X single core for distribution board internal wiring, panel building, or any installation where conductors need to be drawn through conduit, trunking or a panel after installation.

See our 6491X cable page for single core fixed wiring options, or browse the complete LV cable range.

Installation Rules and BS7671 Compliance

Can Twin and Earth Be Buried In Plaster?

Yes, twin and earth cable can be buried in plaster - subject to BS7671 safe zone or 30mA RCD protection requirements.

BS7671 requires cables buried in walls to be either:

  1. Installed in safe zones (within 150mm of the top of a wall, or in vertical or horizontal lines from accessories), or
  2. Protected by an additional 30mA RCD if installed outside safe zones, or
  3. Mechanically protected by earthed metallic capping or armoured cable.

Modern UK installations almost universally rely on 30mA RCD protection at the consumer unit, which means twin and earth can be buried in any wall location subject to the RCD being in place.

Earth Sleeving and Termination

The bare circuit protective conductor (CPC) in twin and earth cable must be sleeved with green and yellow sleeving at every termination point.

BS7671 requires the CPC to be clearly identified at every accessory and consumer unit termination. The bare copper conductor is sleeved with PVC green and yellow sleeving as it exits the cable sheath and runs to its terminal. Failure to sleeve the CPC is a common Code 2 issue on Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 6242Y mean?

The 6242Y code identifies a specific cable construction under British Standards. "6242" denotes two insulated cores plus one bare circuit protective conductor, and "Y" denotes PVC as the insulation and sheath material. The cable is manufactured to BS6004 and rated 300/500V.

What size twin and earth do I need for a ring main?

A UK 32A ring final socket circuit requires 2.5mm² twin and earth cable protected by a 32A MCB. 1.5mm² is not suitable for socket ring mains and is used for lighting circuits.

Can twin and earth cable be buried direct in plaster?

Yes, twin and earth cable can be buried in plaster. BS7671 requires the cable to be installed in safe zones (within 150mm of the top of a wall, or in vertical or horizontal lines from accessories) or protected by 30mA RCD if installed outside safe zones.

Can you cut twin and earth cable to length?

Yes. We cut twin and earth cable to the exact length you need on our automatic winding and measuring machine at Wrexham. You order the length you need, we cut it from the drum, and despatch reduces waste compared with buying a full 100m reel.

Is twin and earth cable suitable for outdoor use?

No, not without additional protection. PVC sheathed twin and earth cable is not UV resistant or suitable for direct burial. For outdoor or buried runs use SWA armoured cable instead - see our SWA cable range.
