Tom Curtin explains how he works, leads his team and how he has been inspired by his colleagues at Cable Services.
Key to his role is supporting his customers in the best possible way with technical information and understanding what the customers want. “We are here to provide solutions to their requests.”
” Since Tom Curtin started with us back in 2018, he has developed and grown into a valuable part of the sales team at the Group. He has built up his knowledge base and now confidently leads his team ” Jason Bostock, Group Managing Director
Solutions, not just supplies
The line that stands out from Tom’s interview is a simple one: “We are here to provide solutions to their requests.” It captures how the internal sales desk at Cable Services actually works. Customers rarely ring up with a neat part number – they ring with a project, a problem or a deadline, and it is the internal sales team’s job to translate that into the right cable, the right accessories and the right delivery date. Doing that well takes technical knowledge, product familiarity across low, medium and high voltage ranges, and a working relationship with the customer that builds up over years.
What the internal sales team handles
On any given day, the desk is quoting projects, checking stock across our six branches, arranging cable cutting to length, chasing down technical information from manufacturer partners and finding answers at short notice for customers with a job stalled on site. It is a role where being genuinely useful matters more than anything else – and as Tom says in the video, understanding what the customer wants is the key to all of it.
Internal sales is also where most customers experience Cable Services day to day. Deliveries and warehouse accuracy matter enormously, but the phone call or email that starts every order is answered by people like Tom and his team – which is why we put such emphasis on keeping experienced, technically capable people on the desk rather than treating it as a stepping stone.
Inspired by the people around him
Tom also talks about being inspired by his colleagues, and it is worth dwelling on that. Sales desks can be high-pressure places, and what keeps standards up over the long term is rarely process alone – it is experienced people passing on knowledge, backing each other up on busy days and taking pride in getting a difficult order out of the door. That is the environment Tom describes leading his own team in, and it is exactly the culture the group works hard to keep as it grows across its six branches.
Developing people since day one
Tom joined the group back in 2018 and has developed and grown into a leading part of the sales team – a path many colleagues here would recognise.
