Robert Harrison and Mark Wiles from our Swindon branch have signed up to the Great Wiltshire Walk on Saturday 11th July, in aid of one of our nominated charities Julia’s House Children’s Hospice .
They will be walking 26.2 miles through the Wiltshire countryside.
Julia’s House are a children’s hospice, that provide specialist care for children living with life-limiting and complex conditions. About Julia’s House
Julia’s House provides practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, delivering care in family homes, out in the community and at its hospices across Dorset and Wiltshire. That support runs from regular respite sessions that give exhausted parents a break, right through to end-of-life care and bereavement support for the whole family. The charity’s care was rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, and like most children’s hospices it depends overwhelmingly on voluntary income – donations, charity shops and fundraising challenges exactly like this one.
What makes children’s hospice care special is that it supports the whole family, not just the child. Parents get a rest and a listening ear, brothers and sisters get attention at a time when it is hard to come by, and families get help to make magical moments and lasting memories together – the phrase Julia’s House itself uses, and one that says everything about the spirit of the place.
A marathon, on foot
It is worth letting the distance sink in: 26.2 miles is a full marathon, walked in a single day through the Wiltshire countryside. That is eight to ten hours on your feet, and it asks a lot of the legs, the lungs and the willpower – which is rather the point. Robert and Mark have set themselves a proper challenge on Saturday 11th July, and every mile of it will be earned.
Charity is a group effort
Fundraising like this happens right across the Cable Services Group, with each branch backing nominated charities in its own community. Our Wrexham head office has raised more than £8,000 for Hope House Children’s Hospice over the past two years, and our Stone branch recently took on a fancy dress charity canal walk of its own. We trade in these towns, so putting something back into them is simply part of how the group operates.
