Our Stone branch are doing a Fancy Dress Charity Canal Walk and they would love your support.
They are walking about 5 miles along the Trent and Mersey canal on Saturday, July 18th, to raise funds for local charities like Dougie Mac, Stone Community Hub , and many more that benefit our community.

Who the team are walking for
Dougie Mac – the Douglas Macmillan Hospice – is one of North Staffordshire’s best-loved charities. Based in Stoke-on-Trent, the hospice provides inpatient care, community care, wellbeing services and dementia support for adults living with life-limiting illnesses, alongside dedicated services for children and young adults. Like most hospices, it relies heavily on voluntary income: donations, a weekly lottery, charity shops, legacy gifts and fundraising events like this one all help keep that care free of charge for the families who need it most.
Stone Community Hub, meanwhile, does exactly what its name suggests – supporting people in and around Stone itself. Keeping part of the money raised that close to home means the team will be able to see the difference their miles make on their own doorstep, in the town where they live and work.
Hospice care is one of those services most people don’t think about until their own family needs it – and it is only when you look closely that you realise how much of it is paid for not by government funding but by ordinary people running raffles, filling collection tins and, yes, walking canal towpaths in fancy dress. That is why days like this matter well beyond the money raised on the day itself: they keep these charities visible in the communities they serve.
Five miles, in fancy dress
The route follows the Trent and Mersey Canal, which runs right through the heart of Stone – a fitting backdrop for a branch that has been part of the town for years. Five miles along the towpath is a pleasant enough stroll on a summer Saturday; doing it in full fancy dress in the July heat is another matter entirely, and we salute Lisa and the team for committing to it. If you spot a curiously dressed group making their way along the canal on Saturday 18th July, give them a wave – or better still, a donation.
Part of something bigger
Charity efforts like this happen right across the Cable Services Group. Each of our six branches gets behind causes in its own community – our Wrexham head office, for example, has raised more than £8,000 for Hope House Children’s Hospice over the past two years through raffles, dress-down days and its 150 club. The principle is a simple one: we trade in these towns and have done for decades, so we should put something back into them too.

Every pound raised goes to the charities themselves, and even small donations add up quickly across a whole team of walkers. If you aren’t able to donate, sharing the fundraising page with friends and colleagues – or simply turning out along the canal to cheer the walkers on – is support the team will appreciate just as much.
